Our DrupalCon Vienna 2025 Session at the Vienna Austria Center - Preserving Legacy, Empowering Future: How Drupal Powers AMI’s Global Digital Network
At DrupalCon Europe 2025 in Vienna, Roland Obermair held a session titled “Preserving Legacy, Empowering Future: How Drupal Powers AMI’s Global Digital Network.” The session focused on the technical and structural choices behind Association Montessori Internationale’s global digital ecosystem, and how Drupal enables both long-term preservation and modern digital services.
AMI operates a worldwide network of educators, institutions and training organisations. Their digital platform needs to serve many different audiences, languages and content types, while maintaining consistency and reliability. Drupal provides the base for this, allowing AMI to run multiple sites that share core components, design and integrations, while remaining flexible enough to meet different regional and organisational needs.
A key element discussed was AMI’s Drupal-based digital archive, built using the Archipelago repository system. This allows important Montessori historical materials to be stored, managed and made accessible in a sustainable and structured way. The session also covered:
- Membership and commerce tools for global community access
- A credit-based platform for distributing educational resources
- Integration with systems such as FileMaker, Mailchimp and Keycloak (SSO)
- Accessibility and compliance work across regions and languages
- CI/CD workflows supporting ongoing improvements
The focus was on real architectural decisions, lessons learned and how Drupal supports both long-term continuity and future-focused development.
If you work with multi-site networks, archives, education platforms or large membership-based organisations, the approaches discussed may be useful for planning or evaluating similar systems.
